Regardless of large or small your business may be, a well-designed logo can still aid in promoting your products or services. Most retail businesses are small and usually only market merchandise to the community where they are based. Retail logos are usually simple in design and target a certain audience in the public. Many retail shops only offer certain items to customers. For example, a clothing retailer may only offer clothing for men and women or only cater to one gender. Choose an Image
Like most other types of logos, retail logos usually include some sort of image. This image may be an abstract design or it may be a piece of merchandise specific to the retailer. Some common images seen in retail logos are t-shirts, jeans, pottery, human figures and other related symbols. Some choose to use no image and simply make the initials of their business as the main characteristic in the logo. This practice can be seen in logos of larger and more established retail chain stores nationwide. No matter what type of image you plan to use, it should be a basic and simple one. Never choose an image with a great deal of detail as this can be overwhelming to the public and less memorable. Be sure to avoid choosing an image online. Most of these images are already being used by other businesses and companies. You will be at risk of trademark infringement if you use an image that is already in use.
Selecting the Perfect Colors
Color is an important element of design in most all logo designs. However, when creating a retail logo, color is of little importance. Most retail logos include colors specific to their place of business. If a retail shop consists of the colors red, blue and green; it is most likely these are the colors that will be used in their logo. It is best to use only two or three color in a retail logo. Too many colors can cause a tacky appearance and give the logo a cheap feel. You will want to choose colors that contrast well with one another to get the best possible look for your retail logo.
Text Choices and Font Style
There is no set standard for the style of font to use in a retail logo. This type of logo can use nearly any style of font. Most choose to use Ariel or Verdana as the style of font. Font should be placed in the logo as bold typeface. This will emphasize the font and make it more easily read from any angle. Sizing the font is very important. You want to be sure that your font size works well with the entire design. Never place font in too large or too small size. This will negatively effect the success of your logo.
After choosing a font style, you will need to decide on what type of text will be included in the design. Most choose to include only the name of the retailer. This is often practiced by retailers. Others choose to only use the initials of their business or company. You may use the text to place a sales pitch or slogan in the logo. Any text that is used should be limited to only four or five words. Using too many words in your design can cause a cluttered look.
