A social club starts with a group of people who share the same interests. Many communities have residents who spur the creation of social clubs so people can come together, share information about a common subject, and eat and drink while they visit. A social club will have several different structures: some with membership, some without, others may have more formal meetings, a board of directors, and possibly a set of bylaws for that chapter.
For a social club to be recognized as a unit, it’s a great idea to have a logo. The logo will provide recognition, will portray the clubs area of interest, and be used in many situations. Stationary, board minutes, bylaws, business cards, and other applications such as tee shirts or hats. When looking to choose a design for your social club’s logo, there will probably several people involved such as the president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary.
Consider the logo as a representation of your social club and find out the colors, any images, or an existing design that the board members may already have in mind. Your region of the country such as the state you’re located in and whether you live in the Southwest or Northeast may have an influence on your design elements.
Below are some questions to consider when choosing elements for your Social Club logo:
* Does the social club have two to three colors they already associate with?
* Is there a photograph, map, historical graphic, image, or other element already in place?
* Does the social club pertain to a specific hobby or subject like chess, cooking, a particular nationality, hunting, or a collecting of certain objects?
* What is the average age group this social club will pertain to?
* Where will this club normally meet? A restaurant, library, hotel lobby, or school?
Colors may be chosen by the social club’s area of interest. If the interest is gardening, you may want to choose deep green, browns, and yellow or blue. Checkers or chess social clubs may like black and white. A social club based on wines and wine selection would be recognized by burgundy colors or gold.
The image or graphics used in the logo should coordinate with the colors chosen, or create a stark contrast to help it to stand out. Keep in mind that graphics or colors need to allow the name to stand out—whatever font is used should be larger and bolder than the graphics. And a logo will be looked at from far away, not just up close. It should be kept as simple as possible so that it can be recognized from a distance or if it is printed on a small surface.
A social club is just that—social and your logo should be a good representation of the subject you are gathering to discuss. When working with a graphic design artist, be ready to offer your ideas and even sketch out your idea on a sheet of paper. Use colored markers or pencil to color the areas where you’d like to see certain color choices, a rough placement of any images is helpful, and if you have a certain font in mind, find a sample of that lettering on another source like packaging or another logo. Working with a graphic designer will take a few tries, but it will be worth the extra effort to create a logo for your social club.
